One of the most mysterious and weird phenomenon in quantum Mechanics is quantum entanglement. It is so called “weird” because of it’s behavior. I am sure that you will start to act weird after knowing about Entanglement.
So let’s dive into the topic by an example. Imagine you have two unbiased coins and you toss them both at the same time. When we are tossing the coins, we don’t know about the end result. We have 4 possible results :
1. Heads, Heads
2. Tails, Tails
3. Heads, Tails
4. Tails, Heads
Now in any manner we don’t know what would be the result. If you knew the result in advance then you would end up being a superhuman. Anyways, there is no way we can predict the result as they both are unbiased coins. Now, let’s see modify it a bit and look at a different example. Imagine you are given the result of Coin A and we are asked to predict Coin B. If Coin A is given as Tails, then the only two possibilities of Coin B are Heads or Tails. Well you cannot still be 100 percent sure UNTIL and UNLESS you look at the coin. So, can we say that we have a 50% chance of the Coin B landing as Heads and 50% chance of it landing as Tails.
Now, this is what happens in the world we live in THE CLASSICAL WORLD.
But, what if I said we could know the result of Coin B instantaneously when the Coin A feel to the ground and we saw the reading. Or even more insane.. What if the coins were miles away or even light years away??? We could still get to know the face of the coin!!! Well, you would say that’s impossible. BUT!!! This does happen in the Quantum World and not in the classical world or the world we live in!!! And this phenomenon is known as ‘Quantum Entanglement’.
So now, let’s make things small and get into the Quantum World. Now, imagine you have two particles, Particle A and Particle B and let they both be entangled. Particle A is on earth Whereas Particle B is near the Sun. Now, we measure Particle A and find that the particle is spin up. The moment we find measure Particle A, we get to know the value or spin of Particle B. That is, Particle B must have spin down. This is how entanglement works. Now, by reading the previous paragraph, some of you might have thought that how could entanglement be possible? As the information about the state of Particle A reached Particle B at a very high speed. In fact higher than the speed of light which is the universal speed limit!!! Well, you are not the only one. Even Einstein thought the same which raised the birth of a new paradox. But, the EPR Paradox which has many flaws in it.
CONCLUSION
For all the people who want to flex on their friends with a “fancy definition” about entanglement. Here it goes, Quantum entanglement is a physical phenomenon that occurs when a pair or group of particles is generated, interact, or share spatial proximity in a way such that the quantum state of each particle of the pair or group cannot be described independently of the state of the others, including when the particles are separated by a large distance.To sum up, Entanglement is basically a kind of telepathic connection between two particles when their properties match each other in a certain way regardless of their distance. That is, one particle can be at one end of the universe and the other particle can be on the opposite end of the universe and still, Entanglement would hold good.
